Place the zipper underneath and center it in the opening. Using the zipper foot on your sewing machine , sew along the edge of the opening to secure the zipper to the tote bag lining piece. Pivot the corners. When you reach the top of the zipper, open the zipper a little bit and then resume sewing. This will allow you to keep sewing straight without running into the zipper pull. Turn the bag lining piece over so the wrong side is facing up. Place the other pocket fabric piece on top of the one you just sewed with the zipper, right sides together.
Pin in place. Sew around the pocket using the straight stitch then the zigzag stitch. I hope this tutorial help you learn how to sew a zippered pocket. Once you master this, you can add zipper pockets to anything! Just remember, the width of the pocket fabric should be two inches wider than the zipper and it can be a deep as you want.

Sometimes that requires taking out a couple more seams to get to the areas you need and then sewing them back at the end. Thank you Sara for coming up with this idea! It never occurred to me that there was a way to cover that up. What a smart cookie you are!! I guess I will just have to use a sew in along with SF throughout. Thank you!
You might also have to do more clipping around the seam allowance. I have just tried your technique but have found that the fabric tends to crease a bit in the corner after pushing the facing inside. Any way to avoid that? See if you can clip into the corner a few more threads. Usually between that and some steam, you can get it to lay flat!
